Cheaper Oxford trips and school results

Bicester Motion submitted three outline planning applications to Cherwell District Council on Friday, 14 August, marking the first formal planning stage of the 10-year masterplan it consulted on earlier this summer.

The applications cover three distinct parts of the 444-acre site. The Rushes proposes around 475,000 sq ft of commercial, demonstration, hospitality and customer-engagement space. Command Works Phase 2 would add roughly 167,000 sq ft of flexible employment space between YASA’s headquarters and Bicester Heritage.

The third application, Motion Living, proposes around 200 low-rise apartments, including affordable housing. Bicester Motion says a fourth application, for a New Technical Site with around 506,000 sq ft of research, development and scale-up space, is still being finalised and is due to follow.

Taken together, the four proposals would amount to about 1.44 million sq ft of new commercial space alongside the homes and other facilities. Bicester Motion puts the gross development value of its wider investment plan at about £1 billion.

There are some big economic projections attached. The company estimates the completed development could support around 7,600 operational jobs and 5,600 construction jobs, while generating £1.19 billion in annual gross value added. Those are Bicester Motion’s projections and depend on the plans progressing through the planning system; they should not be read as guaranteed outcomes.

For Bicester, the key change this week is procedural but substantial. When we covered this in June, residents were being asked for views on the masterplan. There are now actual applications for Cherwell District Council to consider.

These are outline applications, so they establish the broad principles rather than every architectural detail. If they progress, detailed designs would come later through further planning stages. The next things to look for are Cherwell’s validated application references, consultation arrangements and the promised fourth application.

A new £3 park-and-ride combined ticket starts on Monday, 17 August. It covers up to 16 hours of parking at Oxford Parkway plus return bus travel into Oxford for up to five people of any age.

The deal also applies at Oxford’s other park-and-ride sites and can be bought at parking machines or through RingGo by selecting the parking-and-bus option. For Bicester households that already drive to Oxford Parkway before continuing by bus, it is a useful price change rather than another new travel scheme.

Stagecoach is simplifying its Oxfordshire ticket range and changing fares from Tuesday, 1 September.

Most adult single fares below the £3 national cap will increase by up to 10p, while most child singles rise by 20p to 30p. Day tickets generally increase by 40p to 60p, and point-to-point return tickets are being withdrawn, meaning passengers will need two singles or an appropriate Day ticket instead.

There is also a new app-only 28 Day ticket, while online and on-bus pricing will be aligned.

Students received A-level and vocational results on Thursday, 13 August, and The Bicester School says its A-level results improved on last year.

According to figures published by the school, 20% of grades were A or A*, up seven percentage points from 2025. Some 45% were A–B and 68% A–C. In vocational qualifications, 37% of results were Distinction or Distinction*, with 81% at Merit or above.

Students are now moving on to university, apprenticeships and employment.

The next date on the school calendar is Thursday, 20 August, when GCSE results are released nationally.

The Bicester School says Year 11 pupils can collect results from Evenlode Hall between 9am and 11am. The Cooper School also confirms Thursday as GCSE results day, with collection arrangements at its Sports Hall.

If there is a Year 11 student in your household, it is worth checking the school’s own communication as well, particularly for individual collection, careers or sixth-form arrangements.

One date has been appearing repeatedly on publicly accessible Bicester event and community pages: Saturday, 22 August.

The underlying event is easy to verify. Bicester Town Council is hosting an Elton John Tribute Night at Garth Park from 6pm to 10pm, with Ultimate Elton headlining and local singer Malish also performing.

The council’s latest public information lists tickets at £12 in advance or £15 on the day, with under-16s admitted free when accompanied by an adult.

Repeated social sharing does not tell us how many people will attend or how many tickets have sold, so we are not going to invent a popularity story around it. What it does show is that this is one of the local events getting plenty of public visibility heading into the weekend.

Some useful bits of town life are so ordinary that they are easy to overlook. Bicester’s Friday Market is one of them.

The market runs on Sheep Street every Friday from 9am to 4.30pm, usually with around 20 stalls. The current mix includes fruit and vegetables, hot food, cakes, cards and other traders.

Bicester Vision traces the town’s market history back to the 1200s, but what makes the present-day version useful is that it is still part retail and part community space. Bicester Market Association offers two free community stalls for charities, non-profit organisations and local groups that want to promote their work.

We last mentioned the market months ago, so this is not being presented as new. It is simply one of those longstanding Bicester institutions that is still doing a job every Friday.

Bicester Motion: We will watch for Cherwell’s validated planning references, formal consultation details and the fourth New Technical Site application that Bicester Motion says is still to come.

Stagecoach fares: With the changes due on 1 September, we will check for clearer route-specific prices and anything Bicester passengers need to do before existing ticket products change.
